Epulu Reservation
Dense forest. Access by very poor roads from Bunia or Isiro. Basic accommodation available. Open all year round. Originally named the 'Station de Capture d'Epulu', it was established to capture and export to zoos around the world the okapi, a forest dwelling relative of the giraffe only discovered early this
century.
Parc National de la Garamba
Savannah. 400,000 hectares. Access by poor roads from Isiro or Bunia or by light aircraft usually from Goma. Basic accommodation available in the park. Animals living in the park include antelope, baboon, buffalo, hippopotamus, elephant, giraffe, leopard, lion, warthog, white rhinoceros (very rare), and a wide variety of
birds. Of special interest are the domesticated elephants which are available as game viewing 'vehicles' - one of only 2 places in Africa where this is possible.
Parc National de Kundelungu
Grasslands, forest and riverine habitats. Access by road from Lubumbashi. Basic accommodation is available. Best time to visit is May to September. Animals living in the park include antelope, baboon, hippopotamus, leopard, lion, warthog, zebra.
Parc National de Maiko
Dense rainforest. No access is permitted at present. Little information is available but there are reported to be eastern lowland gorilla in the park.
Parc National de L'Upemba
Savannah straddling the Lualaba River and including several lakes. Access by road from Lubumbashi or by light plane usually from Lubumbashi. Basic accommodation available. Animals seen in the park include antelope, baboon, crocodile, hippopotamus, leopard, lion, warthog, zebra. Wide variety of aquatic birds.
Parc National de Salonga
Animals living in the park include the pygmy chimpanzee.
Parc National des Virunga
Savannah, forests and riverine habitats. 12,000 square kilometres / 4,633 square miles. Access by road from Goma or by light plane. Comfortable accommodation available. Animals living in the park include antelope, baboon, buffalo, chimpanzee, crocodile, elephant, hippopotamus, hyena, jackal, leopard, lion, warthog and a wide variety of birds. Also in this region are the Mountain Gorilla (gorilla gorilla graueri) observation camps at Bukima and Jomba and Tongo Camp where chimpanzee can be observed.
Parc National du Kahuzi-Biega
Densely forested mountains and high savannah. Access from Goma or Bukavu by road. Basic accommodation available. The park was established to protect the endangered eastern lowland gorilla (gorilla gorilla beringei). Animals living in the park include buffalo, chimpanzee, eastern lowland gorilla, elephant.
