Language
The official languages are French and Kinyarwanda. Little English
is spoken but some Swahili is understood in some parts.
Geography
In order that enough food is produced to feed everyone almost every
suitable area of land is under cultivation in Rwanda, the exceptions
being the Akagera along the border with Tanzania and the upper
slopes of the volcanoes.
The mountainous state of most of the country means that the
agriculture relies on terracing to survive.
In certain parts of Rwanda, tea plantations take up large areas
of land, tea is one of Rwanda's major export crops.
Climate
The average lowland, daytime temperature in Rwanda is 24 degrees
Centigrade with a possible maximum of 34 degrees Centigrade, in
highland areas the daytime temperatures range between 12 degrees
Centigrade and 15 degrees Centigrade.
In Rwanda there are four distinct seasons; The long rains from
mid-March to mid-May, the long dry from mid-May to mid-September,
the short rains from mid-September to mid-December and the short
dry from mid-December to mid-March.
In the north-east there is a range of volcanoes whose slopes are
covered in dense rainforest, consequently it rains more frequently
and heavily here.
Kalisimbi, (4507 metres) is the highest of these volcanoes and
is often covered in sleet and snow.
